Reviews/Opinions
Featured Author: Jill McDougall This is a heart-warming story with a universal message about helping out at home.
The text is simply written and flows well with a repetition that will appeal to children.
Featured Author: Frederick Noronha for TCM Reviews (http://tcm-ca.com/reviews/2010.html) Written by a lady from the outbacks of Australia, this is a story of a young girl who finds nobody to play with, till an elderly neighbour gives her an innovative solution.
Simple, charming and fascinating story.
It begins very simply: "Peta wanted to play a game. She looked for her dad -- but dad wasn't home. She looked for big brother Sam -- but Sam was watching TV. She looked for Mum -- but Mum was washing the dishes."
You could guess what the story is about from the "extra pair of hands" in the title. A busy over-worked mum, a kindly elderly lady neighbour, and a girl child... all mixed fairly neatly into this book-of-few-pages.
It contains a lesson for young minds. That they can do something to help out. To make a difference, however young they are. And that giving might be the best form of receiving.
Very well illustrated too, by Kevin Scott Collier, an author and illustrator of children's books. Scott Collier teaches writing and art classes in Western Michigan.
Certainly interesting for Raelene's first children's book. I liked it...
