Featured Author: Kathy Thomason for Murder and Mayhem Book Club (http://www.murderandmayhembookclub.com/roadworks.html) Brussels, Belgium in the year 2022 boasts one of the world's most efficient traffic systems, complete with a computerized monitoring system that lets drivers know what roads to drive on, where to park and when to leave their vehicles and take public transport, all communicated to them through their onboard traffic computers. With humans to keep an eye on things, it is a foolproof system. Until the morning the terrorists struck.
For Hugh, one of the traffic controllers, the day began quietly with a new employee to train, until the trains and roads started backing up. Before they knew it, five and a half million people are stranded somewhere in the city, and a group of men are demanding that a new high-tech weapon be turned over to them. And to make matters worse, the men have wired several buildings around town and blew a few of the buildings up to show that they are serious. In a desperate race to stop them and save the city, Hugh must not only try to find the terrorists, but he must convince his superiors that he is better suited to tracking these men down than the police. And the situation becomes even more desperate when he realizes that one of the terrorists is double-crossing the others.
Filled with heart-stopping action that races along like a runaway train, Roadworks is a chilling look at the future of terrorism with a surprise ending that you won't see coming.
Featured Author: Laurel Midwest Book Review (http://www.midwestbookreview.com/mbw/jun_04.htm#laurel) Gerard Readett has crafted himself a fine techno thriller with Roadworks. With European style and flavor and an international appeal, it's one of the best in this genre I've read in awhile.
The setting is Brussels Belgium in the year 2022. Hugh Ryan is an experienced traffic controller with the Transport Management Centre in Brussels. His quick thinking and cool performance under pressure make him very good at his job. Most of the time his work is cut and dried. He and his colleagues easily maintain free flowing movement of vehicles, buses, and trains that serve the citizens of Brussels. And then the worst case scenario becomes a reality.
International terrorists and self-serving miscreants of various stripes take industrial espionage and greed to new heights. Several well planned acts paralyze the Brussels transportation system and effectively take the entire city hostage during morning rush hour. It could not have come at a worse time. Every Western head of state is in Brussels for a NATO conference. The international consortium of terrorists issue a warning: If, within three hours, all Western powers do not pledge one year's annual military budget to help victims of wars and Western greed, every head of state will die. Despite the potential loss of life, Hugh sympathizes with that demand. His young wife died in Africa due to lack of proper medication and health care in a land of crushing poverty.
Maria Depage is a police officer, and liaison between the police and Anti Terrorism Squad. She's swiftly dispatched to investigate and assist Hugh and his superiors in tracking down the terrorists via the powerful TMC computer system. The story moves towards the arbitrary deadline swiftly, with one surprising discovery after another pushing Hugh into the role of reluctant hero. One branch of terrorists awaits agreement with their money demands, while another accumulates pieces to the latest western war technology - a laser weapon that will help them control the world. Most readers will NOT be prepared for the amazing ending to this fast paced tale.
Roadworks is much more than a simple techno thriller. It pits the greed of modern man against a few people with an idealistic outlook on injustices visited upon powerless societies. Justice is meted out with ruthless realism. And for this reader, anyway, Mr. Readett's fictional tale predicts our future if the rich and powerful businessmen and politicians continue pillaging our world. This one has blockbuster movie written all over it. And I'm looking forward to more books by Gerard Readett.
Featured Author: Ron Schunk, eBook Reviews Weekly (http://www.ronspage.com/writing.html), Author of The story begins at the end, in a courtroom. Hugh Ryan sits through the trial and remembers what led up to the attention-grabbing scandal.
... the story literally explodes in your face! Terrorists have wreaked havoc in Brussels, effectively closing down the city on the day an important NATO meeting is scheduled to take place. All of the world leaders are effectively held hostage by an interesting twist until they meet the demands of the terrorists.
There are two opposing factions within the terrorist cadre and only one of them knows exactly what is happening. Gridlock in the city, bombs planted in strategic places and a stolen high tech weapon complete the mix. Hugh Ryan eventually solves the main problem and leads a commando team to clean out the terrorist cell. Unfortunately that isn't enough, as high-placed politicians make their presence felt in more ways than one, and help to confuse the situation.
Eventually all is resolved and this leads to a satisfying and surprise ending where Hugh finally keeps a promise.
Altogether an exciting story, with intricate plots and twists.
A must read!
Featured Author: Ayden Delacroix for In The Library Reviews (http://www.inthelibraryreview.com/ReadettGerard.html#roadworks) Hugh Ryan worked at the Transport Management Centre, where any means of transportation coming in or out of Brussels, Belgium was monitored. Here they could prevent traffic jams from forming, direct rescue personnel more
efficiently in an accident and even keep the pollution in the city to a minimum. What had started out as an ordinary day quickly turned into a nightmare as first the train and/or metro stations went down, the electrical lifts in the carparks malfunctioned and fifteen tankers created accidents at vital crossroads leading into Brussels. As Hugh thought about it, he realized that if you wanted to take over the city, the best way to do it would be to take out the transportation in exactly the manner everything had taken place.
But who was behind the takeover and what did they want? And how had they known the best way to disable the city and at the perfect moment when many heads of the Western World where attending a NATO conference. An email
demand from the Oppressed People's Army (OPA) revealed everything. Tired of Western governments funding political coups in Africa, the OPA demanded each head of state pledge to send one year's military budget to Africa, to help
the population buy medicine, research ways to better feed and cure the masses and install water factories. While the government officials debate among themselves how they will handle this government threat it is up to Hugh and a small group of workers from different departments, to save the city. But with only a three hour deadline, is it even possible?
To fully understand how much this reviewer enjoyed Roadworks you need to know I rarely read action thrillers, preferring to stick to the wonderful realm of fantasy. However, when I read the blurb for Gerard Readett's Roadworks I was intrigued. I am so glad I read it. Starting out a bit slow due to the needed backstory, it quickly picked up the pace and captured my attention. I was on the edge of my seat, reading as fast as I could, desperate to see what would happen next. Mr. Readett is a very talented author, he clearly explains Hugh's job and the way traffic functions and does so in a way that it is interesting and not at all boring. Then he adds in the antagonists with their own personal agendas. Personally, I think you have to admire Wellens and Sam, granted they were only concerned with what they would get out of this project, but they managed to help the OPA shut down the city, had a plan in place to take out the OPA after they had done their job, and even made sure they couldn't be traced back to anything that happened. I've never read any book where the antagonists were extremely ruthless, conniving, and brilliant. It makes for a very interesting tale.
Non-stop action, plenty of intriguing characters and a glimpse into the future combine to make Roadworks a must read. Don't miss.

"Fascinating near-future thriller."
Featured Author: Dallas Hodder Franklin for Sell Writing Online (http:/sellwritingonline.com/colfrank15.html) Rating 10
The action starts rolling and it just keeps bringing up one surprise after another. It was like watching a Bruce Willis movie. Actually it's so well written that you forget your reading but rather watching it all unfold. 'Roadworks' by Gerard Readett is definitely the signs of a well-crafted, talented writer.
The prologue gives some necessary background and sets up the premise of the story in the not too distant future. Terrorists take over the city of Brussels, by gridlocking the transport system and then pitching their demands. It's not accidental that it coincides with a major UN meeting. A secret laser weapon developed by the Americans will be transported in parts and assembled at this meet but gets intercepted by some unscrupulous people.
The terrorists calling themselves the OPA (Oppressed People's Army) from Africa cripple the city and the TMC (Transport Management Centre) and politicians are led to believe it's to give long overdue aid to Africa. Actually that is all real and true from the OPA's standpoint but double cross and more sinister agendas are the fare.
Readett ingeniously has the narrator, Hugh Ryan, a Transport Authority controller training a new recruit on managing the city's traffic. All aspects of traffic are computerized and Hugh faces the toughest and longest day of his career. This serves the reader well in learning the basics of how things work within this sector, without boring us. It's fast paced, taking the reader along with lots of intrigue and suspense.
The story eloquently goes from first to third person and it never confuses the reader. Rather it makes one feel like you're observing it from different viewpoints simultaneously. Although the story begins at the end and back tracks to how it all happened, Readett keeps your curiosity piqued and wanting more.
It has good, descriptive characterization, natural dialogue and gives you an inside look into the minds and motivations of all the characters. The author adds the elements of fear and greed and how it lures even the unsuspecting.
There's plenty of violent acts but never so descriptive as to be in the gore category. Simple, clear and executed each time. That's literally and figuratively. Readett also adds romance and a touch of humour in just the right places.
Here's another story that gripped my attention from the get go and kept me entranced to the last page. Just when you think there couldn't be any more surprises the last pages give you a turn around.
If you enjoy a great mystery, thriller Roadworks is not to be missed. I highly recommend this book and give it a top rating of 10!

Hugh Ryan is an employee of the Transport Management Centre in Brussels, Belgium. The TMC monitors and controls all traffic inside of Brussels. Not an exciting job but one that Hugh likes and does well.
Wellens was the owner of a large service company located in Brussels. He has made a fortune on illegal activities, even training his employees and paying them handsomely to complete these illegal operations on the side.
When Marion Grayson of the British Ministry of Defence approaches Wellens about obtaining a high tech weapon for her, he devises a plan. The leader of an African terrorist group soon approaches him requesting assistance in taking the city hostage during the upcoming NATO conference. On the fateful day, Hugh begins his work as any other ordinary day. That soon all changes as the city is in gridlock and upheaval due to a huge transportation malfunction. Responsibility has been claimed by the Oppressed People’s Army who has planted bombs in locations all over Brussels and will not hesitate to detonate them if their demands are not met.
Set in the not so distant future, Roadworks is an action-packed thrill ride. The villains are fierce and frightening and you can feel the tension emanating from those who are unwittingly thrown into the disaster. Extremely well-written and thought out, this fantastic novel reads just like a big budget film. Mr. Readett has penned a story full of intrigue, politics and betrayal. It is truly edge-of-your-seat excitement.
Featured Author: Mayra Calvani at Blogcritics If you like international thrillers about terrorism, you may consider getting a copy of Readett’s novel, Roadworks.
The setting: Brussels, Belgium
The year: 2022
What if all transportation in the city — rail, road, underground — abruptly comes to a standstill? What if a bomb is placed in each hotel where a head of state is staying, as well as in buildings nearby? What if a terrorist group demands the greatest humanitarian aid package the world has ever seen?
This is the scenario in Roadworks. Thus comes the protagonist, Hugh Ryan, a Transport Authority controller who has recently lost his wife and who tries to come up with a plan to outwit the African terrorist leader. The web of intrigue is pushed deeper by a man named Wellens, a crime lord who originally was helping the Africans but whose devious plans have taken another cunning path.
Why is vital information leaking out of the Transport Authority? Who are the spies? As tension and chaos escalate and time runs out, Hugh must unravel the mystery in order to bring order to the city and save innocent lives.
Roadworks is tightly packed and moves at a quick pace, with the author relying mostly on clear-cut dialogue and short action narrative to propel the feeling of suspense. The scenario is realistic and Readett does a fairly good job in describing what Brussels would be like in the future. The novel is plot driven rather than character driven with the main story taking place in less than 24 hours, adding to the tension as the reader can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen next.
All in all, this is a well-written, entertaining novel that most readers of the genre will enjoy.
Featured Author: Todd Fonseca put up at Amazon and Goodreads The year is 2022 and the worlds leaders meet for a summit in Brussels Belgium. This cities transportation system, a highly automated combination of auto, rail, and bus systems, is the envy of the world. Hugh Ryan, a Transport Authority controller for the system, comes to work one day preparing to train a new employee when suddenly multiple systems begin to fail. Automated parking garages crush cars backing up traffic, the rail system shuts down stranding passengers, and when multiple tanker trucks explode on the major highways, Hugh learns not only is the city in gridlock, but that terrorists have taken control of the system and are holding the city hostage. Hugh, with his unique knowledge, finds himself at the center of solving a major international terrorist plot. But can he do it in time?
Gerard Readett's Roadworks is a refreshingly original thriller featuring a very unlikely public works employee turned hero. While place in the not so distant future, the automated systems are within the realm of possibility and the Readett's main character is so real that it is easy for the reader to get quickly engaged in the story. Readett does an excellent job of weaving multiple plot lines of greed, deceit, terrorism, and politics which keeps the reader guessing throughout.
Roadworks is a fast paced, engaging, read. It's futuristic but not sci-fi. Readett also conveys a compelling world message which is not at all over the top but rather seamlessly connects the opening prologue to the final chapters resolution. Pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed.
